Predators vs Dithers/Target Fish: What to look out for? When to divide / separate?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Providing your growout tank has enough space, chances are the Festae will establish dominance over the Red Hooks in a non lethal manner. As long as the RH's are too big to eat, and the Festae doesn't sense a threat, things will probably work out. Heres an old pic of one of my tanks w/ Festae, Rivulatus and a school of Spotted Silver Dollars. Things went well for quite a while before I changed it up.View attachment 1356967
You have some kind of hap in there, too?

Good eye. I tried a few Africans in that tank (Eye Biters and a Dragon Blood) to be target fish. After a few weeks it became quite apparent that target fish were not needed. Surprisingly the Africans and the New Worlds got along. I eventually traded the Africans back to the LFS for fish credits.

SDs are tough. i have 5 assorted SD in my 120 ranging from 3.5-6". They live with a dominant Lent pike aprox 10". She chases the SD in short spurts and occasionally draws a few scales. Over all in sixth months I have seen no fin damage at all despite the fairly tight confines of my tank. The only causulty was I had one SD run hard into the rocks. It passed after one day. I am not sure the pike is safe with much else other than larger catfish which it leaves alone.

I wanted to say thanks to everyone for the quick feedback. Mfk has some great members who are always very knowledgeable and with experience.

Update: Rojo my female festae did great with the red hooks. She is no longer trying to establish control and is content to eat along side them this morning. The red hooks also seem to have warmed up to her being there and don't feel the need to get out of her way all the time.

I know it's still early and anything can happen, but this is promising to say the least.

I personally would not keep red hooks in a 4ft tank, they are fast active swimming fish that require a min tank length of 6ft. Hopefully your upgrade is sooner rather than later.

Yeah never kept them, but I realize they can hit 10" and I am definitely getting the 8 footer so I am not overly concerned. Although, I did read that they grow fairly slowly. Maybe that was wrong though.

They are gluttonous pigs, so a lot will depend on what & how much you feed, but I wouldn't exactly call them slow growers. Sounds like you have a good plan laid out for them and your festae. Good luck.
