I am curious if you can have a (or a few) predator fish with a colony of breeding livebearers, without devastating the population of the livebearers, If you can do this, what predator fish could you use in this setup?

Depends on your predator and prey. If the prey are fast enough to avoid the predator, then it might work out. Only issue is: if they predator is constantly trying to chase down the prey, both fish will become stressed out.

I currently have a small school of zebra danios with my blue whale catfish. The catfish has learned to tolerate the danios because he can't catch them, and it seems he's been weaned on to the pellets I'm currently feeding it.

I've tried cohabiting live bearers with predators in the past, but it never worked out. Don't know any species to suggest.

Thanks for the advice, what fish did you try it with, and what was the tank size?

Ive tried this as well, the live bearers always loose in the end, I've had guppies with Angels, mollies/plates with cichlids etc,,it's just not sustainable

Yep I tried this when I was cycling my big 220g as I had 100 guppies in there (after adding the bacteria obviously).. The guppies bred like rabbits for the 2 weeks they were alone. Then I started adding my predators slowly, hoping that the guppies would continue to bred/survive... It ended badly for the guppies..

I had the guppies with a 7" fahaka in a 120gal. Guess the colours of the guppies were too irresistible. The tank was planted, but the puffer still hunted them down.

Another attempt was with my old red wolf fish in a 60 gallon.
