predators!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well there is always go single spieces and go with a Nile perch :evil_lol: tho when they get to full grown they could swallow the intire aquarium intack!

I was hoping for something that would get to around 12"max but not necessarily fast maybe 18-24mths

i would say a channa aruntimaculata, melasoma, pleurothalma, parachanna obscura, clown/royal clown knife they won't dig in your gravel or mess with your plants plus their not skittish grow pretty quick have nice patterns/colour and tend to always be on show once they are settled in,and their pretty explosive at feeding time!Oh and they won't break your tank either! Except you will have to upgrade to a bigger tank at some stage if you go with one of the knives:)

A 4 foot tank is not very big so a lot of the larger fish are not suitable. Some of the mid sized aggressive species may break your tank (why dont you get a custom made thick tank?) so they are out too. You are now left with some smaller predatory fish which means ambush behaviour. Do you want aggression or predation because these are two different things.

Why dont you get a nest of freshwater eels? Perhaps some Australian Archer fish? A FlowerHorn? I personally prefer something with a little personality and suggest you look up Coal Grunter - Hephaestus carbo.

Plenty of other suggestions and possibilities so why dont you post up what you like?

sometimes you just need to have the floating preditors and have dithers to keep the tank looking busy around them. Like gar and then having tin foil barbs as the dithers (not suggesting gars for this tank but you get the idea)

As previously mentioned i would like something predatory, a few that i like are red tailed barracudas, odoe pike and things like that. I would be worried about a snakehead breaking the tank some say they can and some say they dont. If i can get thick glass or acrylic i will. what is the liklihood of a breakage?

get rainbow snakeheads, they are bout as pretty as sh's come and small max around 25cm... in a 4ft u could have a good few expect some small scuffols thou... there easiest sh to source in uk too. and never heard of a rainbow going through the glass...

sounds like fun will have to see if i can get them in vancouver. but im still leaning to odoes or cudas

GET SNAKEHEADS it all depends on the snakehead really redlines are VERY strong and can break glass when big but not when small if you got rainbows or dwarfs or another small sneakhead a break out would be very rare and it would take an adult for sure if even ALSO if you got snakeheads like rainbows or dwarfs you could get a pack of them 3-5 depending on size of tank but a pack of snakeheads would be awsome the will sometimes go into a feeding frenzy and rip apart large food items togather
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR why did they ban them in the U.S i want them so bad

if you don't like snakeheads try puffer fahaka mabye mbu get way to big like 30'' huge puffer baracuda are top water hunters that use speed to catch there food so a longer tank would be needed or they will end up with broken noses also the tank wont be good for more then one large cichlid or a breeding pair but you could keep alot of differnt types in there as singles thow pike cichlids would be cool only one thow you could try 2 but it would really just be a waist of money they hate each other
