Predatory saltwater fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Lionfish would be sweet, but can be dificult to keep so if your just begining, it might not be the best fish for you. I would go with a grouper, a panther grouper would be cool, or maybe even a sea robin. ;)

  • Tesselated Moray (Tesslatta, Green, etc)
  • Trigger (Undulate, Queen, Clown, Blue Line, Titan) If you want something that gets really big go with the Queen or the titan
  • Grouper (Bumble Bee, Panther)
In a 90 gallon tank you might be able to keep more than one predator.
Good Luck!

bothe the panther and the bumble bee will very quickly outgrow a 90g. It sounds like you want a showy, hardy fish about 12"-16" long and fairly full bodied.
Here are two snappers (Lutjanus), the Checkered Snapper (Lutjanus decussatus) 14", and the Fivelined Snapper (Lutjanus quinquelineatus) 16", both pics are by D.C. Cook.
And here are two groupers (Serranidae), the Pacific Mutton Hamlet (Alphestes immaculatus)12", by Y.Hooker, and the Goldribbon Soapfish (Aulacocephalus temminckii) 16" by J.E. Randall.
Since most 90g tanks are 48"x18"x24" these are about as large as you can go but as a showpiece in a fish only tank they would still be impressive, and if you add a jumble of artificial staghorn coral you could get away with adding one of the smaller morays such as a banded or a jewel (if you wanted to).

I would go with a puffer or grouper because they both look nice, theyre personable, and they eat just about anything.

Most groupers are too big for a 90, not sizewise, but in their activity. They are ambush predators, so they sit hidden most of the time, not to showy. Pterios Volitans will stay in the water coloumn and display excellent Finnage. There are smaller lions Like Radiata which would be perfect show fish for your aquarium. Marine Bettas would be an excellent choice for the tank as well. Snappers are definately to big for the tank. In the ocean big fish eat little fish. I have seen Yellow tangs eat smaller fish. It all depends on what you want. The best predators need extremely large tanks. 180-500 gal range, and you are only gonna be half of the small side. People will tell you that some fish will do fine in a small tank, maybe as juvies, but will need the bigger tank when about half grown, and predators grow extremely fast. In one month my lion grew 3x the size it was when I purchased it. Groupers like the Panther grouper can grow 12+ inches a year, max size is about 28". It is alot to consider. Good luck and happy pred feeding. I would go with Picasso Trigger, and puffer. They are both very intelligent. Not just mindless eating machines.

Get a Tessalated Moray

ok ok o k, almost all of this is wrong, clown trigger will get way to big, ribbon eels are very hard to keep and expensive, panther groupers get way to big, queen trigger gets way way wya way way to big and u are wrong they are very agressive, and spotted sweetlips are very hard to keep and get to big also........

i have a 90, it is a reef tank so i dont have any really aggressive fish, but snice u watn that i would go with one of the hamlets, like the indiago, they are like mini groupers, very cool!!! u could get a nice wrasse, and a hawk fish, then mabye a dwarf lion , that would be a cool tank..........

dont get an unadluted trigger for a 75, they cant live in it for life, i dont knoe where u got that from but a 100 or 120 would suit them much better.

and if u are going to get a shark make sure the tank is over 200 gallons please :grinyes: many people think coral catsharks dont need a big tank becuase they dont move that much, but they do....they are one of the most active bottom dewlling sharks at night i have ever seen ( saw it at this one guys house one time)...

Dude you can put more than one aggresive fish in a 90 gallon, and as for lionfish being territorial and aggresive not really there actually pretty docile. Now this is an aquired taste of mine but I would put 4 or 5 squirrelfish. You wanna talk about something being dead before it even touches the water nothin beats these guys. but if you really only want one fish that is the shiz. I would have to recomend.

1. Clown Triggerfish(Large)

2. Blue ribbon eel(very hard though!)

3. Panther Grouper ( Start small and you can watch him gow like a weed!)

4. Queen Angelfish( Not really aggresive but beautiful none the less.)

5.Spotted sweetlips( acts like a dogs wants you get it established)

6.Princess parrot( very shagadelic)

Thats all I got for you cornshuker

if i was you id go wit a volation lionfish or a clown trigger because if ur goin wit one fish u need sumthin really pretty like them
