Preditor fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have been keeping fish now for about a year. I have a 55 gallon community tank, and i haven't lost a fish yet. Nock on wood, so I would say I am doing ok. I was just wanting to get an aggressive fish, and I found the Arrowhead on the internet. This is the fish that I am going to get. I found a good price around here, and I am going to set my tank up to support this fish. Quick question is. What kind of filter should I get. I already have a HOB filter that is designed for my 30 gallon. I was thinking maybe I should just get another HOB to put on this tank. Any info will help. Thanks again.

It doesn't hurt to add the second hang on, that way you alternate which one you clean and the tank stays stable. It is also nice to have back up if one fails.

exactly what kind (brand and model#) of HOB is it? if it's "rated" for a 30 gallon then chances are it isn't sufficient. most of the times the ratings on a filter figure to turn the water over at the most 5 times per hour. you'll want about twice that. if you're getting the arrowhead puffer then you'll want about a 3-4" deep sand bed for the puff to bury into. now having the sand bed you'll be better off with several less powerful filters so that they'll be less likely to suck up the sand and burn out the filter. I'd go with say 3 Aquaclear 20's (there on bigals you can get them for $13.50 each). that way you're still turning the water over but the filter won't be so powerful that it will suck the sand up any time it's disturbed. you can add lots and lots of plants, in fact the more shaded it is the safer the puffer will feel. driftwood may also help to create some coverage for the puff and if you could get some kind of cave for the puff to retreat into that would be great. you may be able to add a school of something very quick that will stay up at the top of the tank but this is really hit or miss.

remember 50% weekly water changes and feed lots and lots of shelled foods. frozen or freeze dried krill, mussels, fresh shrimp or pretty much any other raw seafood from the grocery will work. you can also feed small crayfish (amazing site to see a puffer bite a crayfish in half :WHOA: ), small fiddler or mini crabs, ghost shrimp (best to powerfeed them quality foods for a few days before feeding to your puff) will all work.

Ok the tank that I went an got, has a powerhead on it along with a small HOB whisper filter. Is the powerhead going to be to powerfull for this fish. I can't wait to get this set up. I will still be about a month or 2 before I get the fish, but a new tank hell ya. I love this hobby
