Pregnant P. magdalenae/reticulata

Congrats! If you keep the pup in there, make sure it is able to get enough food. I always remove pups to their own tank.

I will watch it closely. It`s only mother and pup in this tank so there should be no problem providing good amounts of food for the pup,- i feed mostly with a plant tong, and the female always follow the tong if i keep holding the food with it... so i should be able to control it.

So far the mother actually keep a distance to the pup, and if she touches it she will take off to the other side of the tank right away..

The pup is now moved to a 115 liter / 30 gallon.
One question: is it normal that they eat very little at this point (7 days old)? He just take a few mysis shrimps or bloodworms, eat it, and then bury himself after a few minutes. He have not yet filled his stomack so i can actually see it on his back.... just neutral and flat all the time so far.

He gets served 6-8 times a day, small amouts of food. Stabile tamperature at about 26 degrees celsius / 78.8 fahrenheit. Dimmed light, almost complete darkness.

(Btw he is 7 cm / 2,7 inches in disc size and 16,5 cm / 6,5 inches in total length).

Question number 2: His poop have went from clear/white at day 4-5, to light brown day 7 (today). I guess it`s normal.
Take a look at this picture. Seems like he still have some remains of the yolk sac(?). Could this be the reason he still don`t eat like a champ?

If he eats small amounts several times a day he should be ok. He is really small so it probably doesn't take much to fill him up. In your picture, I don't see the yolk sac.

Anyone have experience raising reticulatas? Are they for some reason extra difficult to handle as pups?
It`s been a month now and he eats so little, if anything at all. Still behaving normal, digging in substrate, swimming on the glass, etc... seems strong, but he is so thin.
I serve him several food types every day, including artemia naupiles, spirulina flakes, carnivore pellet, discus bits, chopped earthworm... in addition to the constant supplys of bloodworm, mysis and daphnia. I can`t really say i have seen him eat anything the last two weeks... only some nibbling now and then.

Almost 100% stress free environment, except for the dayle vacuuming and the 50% waterchanges every 2-3. day. He respond to this by hiding under the sand for just a minute or two.
Light (small led lamp) are only on at certain occasions when i for some reason need to get a better vision in there, when cleaning. Parameters are measured every day for the most part (NH3/4, NO2, NO3, PH, GH, KH), and they seem stabile. Nitrates are low - under 12,5 ppm.

I have a feeling i would need something live to feed with, something live at a very small size. But the only live thing i can get a hold of is earthworms, and i have to chop em up to very small bits for him... so the worm isn`t really much alive when served to the ray...

Any advice?

Worms do well as a pup food. At a min they should be fed twice a day. I have found with pups that at first they eat very little and then that keeps increasing week by week. And chopping worms sucks but it's what you have to do. If you have not seen it eat for a week that is not good. Go back to the favorite food and give as much as it will take as often as it will take it.

Retics have always been a harder ray to keep for many. Only know a couple who have had pups and kept them long term.

I am almost 100% certain i have seen him eat earlier, but so little at the time... and only mysis and bloodworms - wich i now offer fresh at least 3 times a day. I must say it`s even hard to tell if he actually are swallowing the food or not. But he sure must eat something, i guess a small pup like this can`t survive long with absolutelty no food..?

This actually stress me out real bad. I felt i had this under better control, specially due to my success with the parants. Twisting my mind now and giving all i have when it comes to time and effort :wall:
