Preparing feeder fish.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i buy in bulk and get 28-30 dozen at a time. i get them in a bucket so i dump the bucket of feeders in the 55g and add salt and quick cure and then wait 3 days and feed. This has done me well for 10yrs anyway.

I don't use feeder fish, but if I did, I would quarantine for at least 2 weeks while having them eat medicated food for internal parasites (for example, levamisole or metro)

I use feeders occasionally when I get them I have a 20g that after straining the fish store water out I put them in there make sure they are ok then feed. I dont like feeders though, too risky. I have feeders that I got attatched to after my eel wouldnt eat them they are in with my cichlids but Ive had them forever. If they out lived my eel, then I felt I needed to keep them ha. Now they are big n happy. Looks kinda lame with feeders in my cichlid tank though haha

I admit...I just throw mine in there and watch the show.

Hybrid, where in Louisville are you getting feeders? I've only got them from the LFS and your bait shop idea seems better.

How do you prepare feeders? You look them in the eye and tell them straight up that they're going to die. They look back and gulp a bit of water, but generally they accept it.

Sounds like a good way of doing it, but sounds like a bit of time.

For my Barramundi, I just buy the feeders, chuck em in the feeder tank, and give him 2-3 feeders once a week.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. IMO it really doesnt take that much time though. More time spent just waiting to put them in the feeder tank.

When I use feeders I like to keep them a few days in clean water and feed them good foods to fatten them up for my piranhas. :)

Been over 5 years since I last had my Silver.

Honestly, I now see an error in how I went with my feeders (Dump them straight into the tank.)

Now, I'm going for a better plan. BREED MY OWN! I'm going to get some, breed, and feed when I have excess.

^^^ thats pretty good. Druu you have mail. -----------anybody else thats interested and lives in the area or has bait shops around them for that matter. I get mine from Pepper tackle on dixie highway. They sell minnows which are small shiners for 1.35dz or a pound for 14.00. A pound is supposed to be 28-30dz of 2-3'' fish/minnows. that makes them about 4cents a peice. So any of you that are interested call your local bait shop and ask them if they sell minnows by the pound.
