preparing wood for a tank ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I put mine in a big bucket of water for a weak treating with de worm treatment and other meds to kill anything bad then stick it to a peice of slate and go!

well i hope that i can get away with just zip tieing the wood to some flat flag stone.... drill holes in the wood and flag stone and just zip tie em together...

hopefully it fits in my tank lol ..... 72x18 130g tank and the peice i wanna use is the first peice of wood i posted it likes 3ft long 20-24" wide lol.... thinking if i stick one end in a corner and let it sit across the tank rather then straight it may fit i will have to check and play to see how she fits and etc... prolly be a PITA with my sliding glass lids lol ...

well been soaking these peices since the weekend, and every time i re fill the can up the water turns a tea colour but only with HOT water cool garden hose water it just stays clear as a whistle ... should i keep changing out the water twice a day (morning/night) with hot water till the water goes clear with the hot water.... i know you have to leach the tannins out and with hot water it opens the pores in the wood.... not like my tank is hot water either lol ... it only 80-82deg

no way to seal it thats why a wire brush or power washer helps. do these sink or float? may not need anything g to keep them down

Yes, I would recommend doing that. But you have to think, if it only leaks when warm then you have to think of the heat in your tank and what it will do. I would soak and change the water in hot water for another week at least and then use how your going to. It usually takes a while fir the tea color to bleed itself out of the wood. I put a piece in my tank and only bled it twice with hot water, but its still bleeding in my tank and its been in there a month. Its the only time Ive done that. I use purigen and it polishes up my water pretty good to counter act the tea'ing. I just have to recharge it more often. But good luck and really nice selection on the pieces by the way! !

yea the peices sink on there own already... and my tap water is prolly close to boiling water temp, waaaaaaaaay hotter then my tank will EVER see.... i have fluval carbon that will be going in the fx5 to help get the tea coloured water outta the tank if it happens as well

Sounds like your doing the right thing. Keep it up and I'm sure you will love the drift wood! Post pictures of it when you get it in there! I'm sure people would love to see your progress :)
