Actually I don't think the rope's head is missing. It looks like it's stuck in the 'post yawn' position.

All polypteriformes after yawning will extend the plants under their chin (I forgo what they are called...).

The specimens have definitely lost their color due to the preservation process, but I don't know which part. When I think of preserved specimens, I think of yellow liquid, these are clear so I don't know what chemical it is.

Wish I was more informed :(

My bad, I was looking at the ropefish the wrong way, I thought its belly was facing towards the Paddlefish. :screwy: <--- me
