i am trying to preserve my 12" tern that passed, and here are some pics i will update as i make progress but this is the beginning. i will check on him in a week. i am using baking soda. 2" deep in the tray, and i filled his mouth and down his throat as much as possible with a straw cut his lips off,and proped his mouth open.i then put some baking soda under his fins to keep them away from his body ... not sure if that will work, but i will find out soon.put him in the container and covered him the rest of the way with more baking soda. wish me luck he was huge

I was working on a roadkill snake and I used salt, baking soda and rosemary (for the smell) I cut it open from vent to throat, removed the innards, and packed it with 2/3 salt and 1/3 bakingsoda and rosemary. He was turning out quite well, kept his color and shape. I was planning on stuffing him with that craft straw stuff- but my mother didnt appriciate a dead snake on the porch. Maybe look up taxadermy online and see what they say. Good luck, nice looking fish.

dude keep us updated in your project. never know how to preserve fish before. and post pic of your progress. goodluck

sorry, i'm no expert, but don't you need to gut anything that you preserve? seems to me like the organs will keep on rotting no matter what you're preserving the flesh with.

freeskier back in the old days they just used salt. this is before they started breaking a hole in the nasal cavity and pulling the organs through the nose. this process will take at least a month maybe more becuase this guy is pretty big and thick. i filled the mouth so it should pull all the moisture from the fish's organs. i am basically dehydrating the fish with baking soda. so the organs will dry up as moisture is pulled out by the baking soda. i will change the baking soda after 1 week or if it is still powder i can let i go a little longer. in theory this should work, but i could be wrong.
