pressurized filter question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Even if you can find an economical pressure filter, you don' t want it to be inside your house because if it leaks, it can shoot water everywhere. Every canister is lightly pressurized and this is why you need clamp lock. I prefer simple filtration and don't find canister appealing because it is hard to clean, and sump too complicated to set up. I filter my 125 with 3 Penquen 350 which are easy to clean and take up only 3.5 inch wall space.

I'm thinking about that. I may have to rework my hood/top to allow me to use a HOB right now it's about 2" from the wall but I could notch the drywall and gain another 4" of space. How many HOB's for good filtration on a 125gallon? Thanks again

Depending on the fish load, I use 3 penquins for my heavily loaded 125 that has about a dozen 8 to 14" cichlid, plus a number of small ones. You do realize that using HOBs requires replacing filter pads frequently. I bought cheap polyester batting from craft shop and cut my own pads. For me, I have to replace all pads or about 1 square ft of batting twice a week. 125 has room to fit up to 4 double size HOBs. The way you can tell how many HOBs you need is to time how long it takes the water to clear up after feeding. If it takes more than 15 min to clear up, you don't have enough filtration. HOBs are the simplest, trouble free and most energy efficient filtration.
