Prestocking 480 with breeding little ones

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The part that makes me like this idea is that once they're big enough, the main fish will mostly ignore the guppies and swim through living, colorful clouds of fish.

Well the idea was pretty much all the guppies would be bye bye. A baby juruenes cat and vulture cat would aid in the removal. The neon tetras will come later.

I've thought about this, but it just doesn't seem likely that something like 30-40 guppies could reproduce fast enough. Guppies just are slow. Live bearing just seems like a very inefficient process compared to egg laying.

Of course, they also have to survive the force of the filtration system and that's another matter altogether when you have small fish in a huge tank. I use to routinely find smaller guppies in my HOB.

And assuming you have a huge number of guppies at the start, (e.g., 100), at some point, a lot of fish might ignore the smaller fish. It would make a good thread if you use either method though, so I'm looking forward to seeing the results.

Can't see the guppies being anything but a snack that are wiped out in a weeks time, unless these fish are unable to eat the breeding pair.

Either ways an interesting idea. Let us know how it works out.

A screen will need to be placed over all intakes and overflow for sure. Will keep everyone posted.
