Pretty cool personal fish behavior observations

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had a florida gar that would relentlessly chase new tank mates and just push his side against them kinda like rubbing on the new mates. Once the new tankmate got tired of trying to escape and let the gar brush against him the gar would stop and be done with it.

Think most of us with big cichlid communitys have a boss, my biggest midas interrupts most other fights like a peace keeper!-) others when the boss choose to run a reign of terror on their tankmates... interesting to see how the different fish act when in power. I have a large butti that enjoys tearing up any of the large robust fake plants I place in, it stops between ripping them up to look at me almost to taunt and mock me lol.

I've had two fish that did this before. My P. bifasciatus and my gibby pleco would get between the two fighting fish and break it up quickly. Sometimes they would chase off the instigator. It is amazing!

Has anyone ever noticed there fish personality change when another fish dies/gets moved to another tank? When one of my albino corys died the other was very different, no longer as active a swimmer
yes. after my male heckelii died all cichlids in the tank became unsettled, easily startled by normal things & it lasted a long time. the only other heckelii in there, female, acted especially lost but that was more expected.
It had always been obvious that he was the calming influence in there but the whole tank-change after he died was a drag.
I got 3 new males. the female appreciates having some of her own kind, but that's it- no personality influence.
:-[

cories always do better in a group. yours would probably perk up if you got a few more.

That's pretty neat. The most aggressive fish I have is some Pink kissing gourami. They're actually pretty docile against everything in the tank, but when in proximity of each other, then they'll react. Just harmless chasing usually. Sometimes I'll see one fish put themselves in front of the other one like they're instigating a chase, passing the opportunity to do the chasing themselves.

I also had a BIG azul bass that seemed to be paired with my female henlei ray. They would always stay very close and the ray wouldnt mind that the bass would sleep literally ontop of her. Late night checks on my old tank were strange seeing that pair together always

I like this to. I have a GT in a surprisingly peaceful new world cichlid tank. I added a Texas and he started making trouble with everyone and my GT will just get in between the Texas and who ever the Texas is going after. The GT never fights with anyone he just interrupts the chase. He is a cool guy never seen any aggression out of him.

I also had a group of about 50 Fire Mouth Fry there was one that was the biggest and definitely the boss. He would kind of heard the group around. At about 6 months when I tried netting some He would dart out of the group as to guide me away from the others and then circle back to the group. he was the only one that would leave the hiding spot when my net was in the tank.

I just broke up a group of 12 Angel fish. The 6 left in my tank and the 6 that went into my girlfriends tank have just been lost. The ones in my tank are still trying to find the other 6. Its only been about a week but I felt bad for doing it.

I wonder what they would do if you put the two tanks side by side and they could all see each other again...

My discus, man they get upset when they would get separated. I had a breeding pair an the female died and they male literally sulked for days. He never was they same.
