I am not at all sure the variant has anything to do with breeding. I also am not sure gibberosa's are more expensive. Like with any cichlid the water conditions and food have much more to do with breeding. I can give you a good story. Me and a friend went to Ga. and got frontosa's. Mine are way bigger than his. I grew out 8 in a 55 gal. I now have them in a 125 gal. My fish are twice as big as his. I feed better and also I do regular water changes and cleanings. All of his have been housed in a 125 since they were bought. I am posting some pics of some of mine. I got them at about 3 inches in Dec. of last year.

Bull the Alpha male is pushing 7 inches.

I also would like to know what you feed them? Mine are growing around 1/2" a month and I feed NLS, 100% pure krill flake once a week, the occasional peacock juvie and I keep my pH around 9.4, Nitrates around 70ppm, and GH/KH both around 140ppm with total dissolved solids around 750ppm. They grow at what I believe is a great rate and 6 months out of the year produce like crazy.

Oh and I know this defies all rules but I never do water changes. Just clean the tank and refil with what little is siphoned out and ever since I stopped doing water changes I have had a higher hatch rate and they spawn more often.

I think that is considered a water change. I belie they are spawning more because you don't change the water - which means that you keep the pH consistent.

What kind of Frontosa do you have???

The easiest Front to breed is the sp. North or Burundi type.......they breed like convicts.
The "most difficult" is the Zaires......though I think they are all easy to breed.

I believe it's all about the setup and patience.
I have a breeding group of WC Mobas. You will not normally get large spawns from Zaire's 10-40 is about the range.
I have heard of a guy that said he had 98, but I believe it was from 2 different girls......though that is still alot IMO from 2 girls.

My largest spawn was 40 and my smallest was 4, but my group spawns all the time.

Good luck

Did you get them to breed??? Are they difficult???

Mine do breed quite a bit. Largest spawn I got was 63 from my largest female. Her average is 40-50 regularly. A friend of mine got close to 100 from a 12" female. 96 or 97 I believe. It's not impossible, just not very common.
