Chloramines will break down if exposed to sunlight so if the container used for aging is outside and not covered you can still age water.

i didnt know that.... do you have any references to this process ????

thanks john

I'll try and find some references... I'm a bit busy this weekend. I did read a while ago that the UV in sunlight breaks down the chloramine. It does take something like 2 weeks in sunlight though.

UV is used as a dechlorinator:

When I find what I'm looking for on aging water specifically I'll let you know.

I think it would be a total pain to age water outdoors. Prime is the best method in my opinion.

It depends how you do it.... I have a container outside and a peristaltic pump pumps water into the tank 24h a day. Excess water flows out through an overflow in the sump. All I do is occasionally refill the container outside. On average the water entering the tank is 2 weeks old. I also add fertilisers to the container so that is another job which is automated. The last time I had to use a hose inside the house was 10 years ago! Not exactly a total pain for me.

hose tank prime....... can't get any easier soon to be ordering dosing pump for auto changer

Some people with Chloramines, who add the water and Prime directly to the tank, are saying it's safe because they haven't lost a fish. I didn't lose any African Cichlids in two of my tanks when I was doing that, but what I noticed is that the fish hid and occasionally would shake their heads. What changed my WC procedure was when I switched from pre-mixed buckets to in-tank mix of tap water & Prime in my small fish community tank. I would lose two or three fish within 24hrs of each change. I had not lost a fish in this tank for almost a year, and after three in-tank water changes, I lost 7.

I read somewhere that Prime first converts chloramines to chlorine by releasing the ammonia bond. If that is true, then after that happens, the chlorine should gas out; correct?

Using this assumption, I have been pre-mixing Prime and tap water in a 35G trash can, circulating it for at least and hour, then pumoing the water into the tanks. So far, I have lost no fish due to water changes.
