The main problem here is that I am overfeeding, and I am trying to make changes in the way I feed so that this is not an issue. I have the problem that I don't want anyone to go hungry. I need to ignore this neurosis and feed appropriate amounts.
no chemical no matter how many times the normal dose you can use is "safe" its not really smart to do. bottom line is its a chemical and chemicals stress out fish and lead to disease and other problems. just do small water changes daily till the levels are acceptable, and as you go to add in the new h2o add a bit of prime to it before you put it into the tank. with patience you should be able to get the levels under control
I have to disagree here sorry. I have used prime for some time now and it is a mystery chemical. I have had ammonia spikes that I could not get ahold of( yes they were my fault) but I strongly believe that prime was the sole reason I didn't lose any fish. I am sure this will earn me a good flaming but I would use prime as a last resort in an emergency. I was getting ammonia levels around 2ppm and doing 50% waterchanges daily and it would be at 2ppm again at the next water change. I added a double dose of prime after every waterchange to detox the ammonia until my next waterchange(this was a cycling rush job I know duh) Simple fact it works if you are in fear of loosing fish use this as a last resort. NEVER USE THIS INSTEAD OF A WATER CHANGE!!!!
