i have been using Prime during my water changes but i just got a fish form my LFS that was a little beat up by the other fish and i have some stress coat that someone just gave me. stress coat is said to eliminate chlorine and do almost the same thing as prime but also it says it helps fish heal faster. my question is because the fish i just got is beat up and needs to heal should i use prime like normal then a small amount of stress coat? or only use the stress coat? or use prime during the water changes and stress coat in between the water changes? or should i use half prime and half stress coat during water changes only? or just not use the stress coat at all? wow thats alot of questions lol but thanks for the help.

i wouldn't recommend using stress coat, i've heard that it "stimulates' the slime coat by erritating the skin of the fish causing it to produce more slime.

Is that what you hear or is that what you know? If you don't know, why would you say you wouldn't recommend it? Sheesh! Stress Coat forms a synthetic slime coating on the skin of fish, replacing the natural secretion of slime that is lost during netting, handling, shipping, fighting and other forms of stress. Stress Coat contains Aloe Vera which acts as a liquid bandage, to protect and heal damaged fish tissue. Stress Coat instantly removes chlorine and heavy metals such as copper and zinc from tap water. Stress Coat also removes chloramines by breaking the chlorine-ammonia bond.

I have used stress coat, and I have not noticed any irritation to the fish. No redness or flashing or any other indication of irritation. Please, if you don't know, please don't give advice. There is enough misinformation floating around this hobby.

so what does that synthetic slime coat do to the gills of the fish? and i love how everything with aloe vera is suddenly a magic remedy, what works well for us might not work well for fish. think about how a fish's gills work, they absorb oxygen into the blood through the thin membranes that form the gills, the slime covers the membrane making it more difficult for the fish to get oxygen out of the water.

Danyal, you must have a vendetta with aquarium pharm :D I've used stress coat for the entire length of time I've been in the hobby, and have never experienced an issue. I was actually noticing the other day, my gt got chewed on and was missing fin and was banged up pretty good. He literally healed within 2-3 days. I got to thinking about it, and realized all of my fish have healed quite quickly. Now, water quality, stressors, and other factors come into play as well. Speaking from experience, YES, use stress coat.

and i've had a sailfin molly regrow it's entire shredded fin(freaking damsel) in about 36hrs, good water quality does an incredible amount of good for injuries.

Wow, at that rate you should have been able to sit and watch it regrow..........My gt wasn't just A fin. It was the dorsal, scales down the entire back, scales on it's side....like I said it was BEAT.

I use both chemicals on each water change. Stress Coat is sorta like the baby cream or vaseline of the aquatic hobby, and I only use a little bit to remove the Chlorine in my water. After I finish refilling the tank and get the filter running again, I follow up with Prime because Stress Coat does nothing in the event of a post-wc ammonia spike. I've had good results with this for years on all my tanks.

Stress Coat is unnecessary fish lotion. It contains Aloe. Stop wasting money on that snake oil.
