PRIME Vs STRESS COAT?????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've used Stress Coat as declorinator for years...never had a problem.

^ FWIW I've seen several folks on various forums also saying they think putting chemicals into the tank is terrible - they have not added any conditioner for years with chlorinated city water and have never had a problem.

I started out with Stress Coat since thats what the lfs 'pushed'. But once I got on various forums and found out about Prime, especially since its significantly cheaper, I have only used Prime since (well except for my auto system that uses inline chlorine/micron filter).

There has also been discussion that aloe vera causes nothing good really, and can only add to the organic waste in the tank.

If it were me, with only chlorine (no chloromine), and had I not bought a 2L of prime, I'd get some pure sodium thiosulfate for chlorine and skip any of the rest of the additives - at least if I could not plumb it in. But prime is also nice to have handy in the case of ammonia spike, etc.

think about how a fish's gills work, they absorb oxygen into the blood through the thin membranes that form the gills, the slime covers the membrane making it more difficult for the fish to get oxygen out of the water.

wow, you may have just answered my question! i just finished starting this thread.

i posted this just a few minutes ago in a different thread. no views yet, hopefully you guys can help.

Can putting too much stress coat kill african cichlids?

I have a 3 week old 55Gal African Cichlid tank. I upgraded from a 28gal to this new one and put all of the 28gal's contents into the new one about 3-4weeks ago and added live bacteria. Transferred the fluval 205 and got a new magnum 350 also for the 55gal. the fish were added 2 weeks ago and were fine, until tonight, I put some stress coat (a little less than 1/4 of the 16oz bottle) without H20 change. 2-3 hours later, my fish were gasping for air (it seems) and i lost about 5 cichlids (small to large).

To each his own with regard to dechlorinator. I use Prime. But I've also used Stress Coat (got a free bottle) and Genesis (yellow stuff). Never had problems with any of them.

I'm a fan of water changes and Melafix for injuries.
