you can od with prime ive poored whole bottles in my tank when it was cycling because i was afraid that the nitrite levels were sky high and i thought my fish were stressing too much
when i do water changes i dose on the amount of water im changing
not on the amount the tank holds but sometimes i put an extra capfull in
ive never had an issue

That is not what seachem says....They make the stuff, so I'm inclined to go with them.

My main goal is to not waste the prme, I just wanna use whats needed and sometimes a little extra for safe measure. I just wanna make sure I am using enough, more than anything.
