I was wondering how long Prime will last or if it even works when you put a bottle of it in a 5 gallon pail with tap water and mix it up...then I want to use that diluted prime mix during a water change...say 2 weeks later......would this work or would the prime be rendered useless?

F1 Vet is correct, but if the water has chloramines then you do need something to break them down. They will not break down and evaporate on their own.

As for the OP, I am not really sure I understand what you are asking, and if I do understand I don't see the point. Can you explain a bit further?

Not understanding why you need to do that? Wouldn't it be better to just treat the whole tank with prime before you fill it up when you do a water change.

I also fail to see the point of doing this? If you want to age your water, then as stated before the chlorine will just gas off anyway. Mixing it like this is just asking for confusion when you forget how much prime is in the bucket of water you have sitting there. Also, a bucket of water is a lot more cumbersome than a little bottle of prime.

I have actually been thinking about this and my best guess is you are trying to save money? A few months ago I ordered a pretty large bottle of Prime (like 2 or 4 liters) for about $60 off an online store (there are multiple, check prices because they vary - especially with sales). It seems expensive at first, but when I did the math it ended up being a savings of over $50 if I remember correctly. I have been using this bottle (pour some into the smaller bottle that I kept from before) and with doing about 30-40% water changes on a 125g tank every 4-5 days I haven't even made a dent in the bottle yet. Just a suggestion if that is what you are going for.

U pour the prime in ur tank 1st?

When i refill i use a thread pour in 5 gal bucket use an ir thermo to know exact temp of water and add untill full

You treat for the whole tank volume if you don't add it directly to the new water. Doing it by treating 5 gallon buckets gets tiring when your doing a 50%+ water change on a 100+ gallon tank.
