that is a hybrid gar, a cross between a gator gar and a spotted gar (noted in the hybrid section only by the scientific names) - this hybrid form is designated (common name) as "crocodile gar type II". the fish has gone through many pattern changes as it has developed (it's nearly 7 years old now) and there are various photos of the fish in the gar forum, etc.

thanks! given your comments and avatar photo, sounds like i'll definitely be contacting you about some juvie SAL pics. it has been a while since i have kept a little SAL...mine is about 3-4 years old now and the gold spots are long gone.--
