Hi All
I joined this site today as it seems from all the info I have read on the web that I may have made a HUGE mistake!!

I have had fish previously, but after our re-location from UK to Cyprus it has taken 4 years to talk my other half into letting me have another tank! After the initial problems trying to find a decent fish shop in the area (with anything like decent fish), I finally set up the tank and weeks later here I am with fish swimming around ...woop woop:)

SO...

I have a tank
100 x 42 x 44cms

I bought my fish.....bare with me on this......

1 angel
5 mollies
1 neon (2 died)
2 paradise fish
1 silver black finned shark
1 red tailed black shark
2 plecs

AND today I bought what we all thought (or probably assumed) was another type of shark......

Only when it started acting VERY strangely did I look it up on the net and discovered it's a

pangasius catfish

Now am I wrong in thinking that this is indeed a MONSTER FISH????
At the moment it is 11" long (roughly) and spending its time in the top corner of the tank swimming back and forth in jerky movements. It was very skittish when I put it in the tank swimming erratically all over the tank, jumping and banging into things.

I will upload a pic when I get one..

It will get along fine with its current tank mates but will outgrow the tank eventually, at 11" it may already be too big. I find that they are quite skittish. There a few types of pangassius and I guess it's the type commonly sold as an iridescant shark.
This is a good site for advice before making any more purchases.
Welcome to MFK and good luck with your hobby.

Thanks Tim for that info...
I made a mistake it is 11cms not inches.

He's still in the corner of the tank swimming up and down, been doing that for 4 hours now!!

They are busy little fellas they never seem to stop. I had 2 together and there movements mirrored each other. V fun to watch.
I cant imagine Cyprus having much of a trade in freshwater fish but I would think that marine fish would be more available with lots of variety no?

Welcome to MFK!!!

Your irridescent shark will indeed become a monster. My 2 year old albino is only about half grown at his current 17" (43cm) length. And, he's eating 2-3" shiners along with his pellet/stick diet.

Hi Tim,
i think fishkeeping is not that common out here. Like I said there are not that many shops in the area, and most only stock goldfish.

Some of the larger shops sell the likes of oscars and the larger cichlids, but they are very expensive here.
Example : neons are 3 euro here (I seem to remember them being around 1 pound in the UK)

However (Harry) our new problem fish was only 6.60 euro.

I am attaching some pictures which I managed to get as he seems to have calmed down a little for the time being.

JEEZ! 1 Pound Neons! I usually only see them about the size of a guppy. What kind of water do you use to make your neons grow up to a POUND?

*** I am kidding... I know she meant pounds as in money*** I couldn't resist!

LOL yeah right you knew ;) *Jokes*

Yeah your ID shark is going to take some time to get used to the new tank and they NEVER seem to stop moving, All part of their appeal for most people. You will need to either upgrade your tank in the future or find it a new home as they do grow quite large and need alot of swimming space as I'm sure your noticing!

:welcome: to MFK BTW

Thnx guys for all the help and advice.

Lion8974 I knew someone would "bite" with the 1 pound neon quote after i re read it!!

Well Harry seems quite settled in now swimming around the tank with the others. Will let you know his progress.
