Problem with Ammonia

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Are you reading it right from the tap?? Cloramine would give you a false positive for amonia in your tank..... you might not actually have a problem.

Agreed, there are definitely potential explanations - firstly that the ammonia test kit is giving wrong readings and secondly that chloramine is causing the ammonia readings.

There are dechlorinators out there that will break the chloramine bond but leave the ammonia alone so that an ammonia test kit will give a correct reading. I think one of the master test kits had a chlorine test that included a dechlorinator that did this so you could work out the ammonia content of chloramine but I'm speaking from old memory.

A friend of mine works for the water department. He told me they add chloramine, which is a combination of chlorine and ammonia.

Also, I called a specialty pet shop up in Tinley Park and was asking for suggestions on what to do. It turns out the owner lives a few blocks from me. He said when they first changed over to the new system, the ammonia was reading almost 5.0 and he lost a bunch of fish. He ended up having to put in a r/o system. I did lose a few VERY healthy rays a while back it could have been around the same time.

One last thing, I was googling ammonia in drinking water and I found another possible explanation. It says if the water company uses cement in their systems it will multiply the ammonia levels in the water. And the guy I know who works for the water dept said they spray a cement liner in the underground pipes.

If you gotta get an RO system I would recommend a Merlin RO System. You can find them on ebay for around $400. Unlike most RO systems that put out only 100-150gpd the Merlin puts out around 600gpd if you have good water preasure (60 psi). I have 2 of them, having used the 100gpd models before I will never go back.

With RO water, dont u have to put all the good minerals back into the water? What additive does this? im just curious...

I use the merlin RO, great kit and produces at a very quick rate. I have used the 150 GPD units before as well. I now put them on the waste of the merlin RO which reduce the waste water and increase the production rate and also increase the tds level so there is no need to use RO right minerals.
