Problem with aquaclear motor

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Don't get me wrong the filter is absolutely amazing and IMO much better than most of the other power filters out there because it holds so much more media and when it was running it did a great job on my tank. I don't want to give up the filter just want to get it running again. It was my fault so much sand got kicked into it. i can't blame the filter for that.

Well i got the filter going. I had to make sum minor adjustments with the impeller but the filter is running very smoothly and quite! I haven't seen it run this quite in years.

Believe it or not this is the second impeller i have had to replace beacuse the filter would constantly make loud noises and I had to constantly adjust the impeller to get it to become more silent which would never last. I assume sand was the issue because when I first got the filter in like 2008 it was fine but after like 6months a bunch of sand had accumulated in it(my fault) so I eventually replaced the impeller but the sound didn't stop so here I am with a new motor. I honestly think I scratched the old motor up trying to get the stupid impeller out(Ino ino im retarded). So that's the story. My aquaclear 50 is running very smooth. If only my 110 would run smoothly.

That is EXACTLY what happened to my 110. I was retarded and bought pet store sand cause i was picky about the pfs in my area. The end result was a loud AC110. Mine is actually only loud for the first couple of hours after turning it back on. It seems to get into a "grove" and starts working like a charm again, Until i decide to turn it off.

Sand is definitely what has made my old AC70 touchy, I used to have it in the tank with my jack about 2 yrs ago when he was in a 55 by himself with sand substrate, He had a lovely habit of blowing sand into it when keeping up with his home, which was my fault as well for having the cave right by the intake. I now run 2 AC 110's, 2 AC 70's(including old one), 2 AC 50's and the are still by FAR my favorite HOB filter. I do have 2 big marinelands as well and a few crap Top Fins/Aqueon (they tend to come with tanks) and the marinelands are ok, but AC's keep my tanks crystal clear (my tanks are very much over filtered though, and I dont use sand anymore).

I have 5 AQ's 2 110's 2 70's and a 20, they all work great, whenever the impeller doesn't move just plug it in without the filter and give it a little flick with your finger, it will start spinning, unplug it and attach it back to the filter and turn it on.. Works everytime... Your impeller itself can't break on the AQ unless the plastic blades break of or something. It's just a magnet with some blades. Theres no motor on the impeller.

thanks for the advice guys. I am glad people love these filters as much as I do. I have defiantly learned my lesson with the sand and I am now alot more carefull about where I place my filter.

Another similar challenge happened to me with my flounders kicking up sand into the impeller on an AC 50 that I had.

I was mind boggled when I went to the Hagen home page to buy replacement parts for my AC HOB filters and discovered that there were different impellers for the AC 10, 20, 50, 70 & 110, but there were only two or three different motors that spanned all of the filter sizes. How does that work?

The same motor with a bigger impeller will pump more water, to a certain extant.

Try putting a small sponge on the siphon it will eliminate sand to the impellar ,did that on my three aquaclear 110s w sand substrate several months ago, and not a problem since.

Tried that, the filter eventually sucked up the sponge. Plus to me putting a sponge there kind of defeats the purpose and reduces flow rate.
