Problem with cichlid tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My guess, tell me if I'm wrong, is that the tank is not properly cycled. When I say to test the water params, I principaly mean ammonia, the numer one aquarium fish killer.

If the tank is cycled and I am offending you by asking those questions, then I apologize. If not, there are plenty of threads on the subject here on MFK.

If the tank is not cycled, then I would suggest :

1) immediate 50% water change with dechlorinated water;
2) if possible, a dose of seachem prime to detoxify ammonia;
3) don't touch to the filter

The fish should instantly look happier.

4) cycle the tank with fish in using stability (many threads on here)

Good luck !

It sounds to me like your new to the whole fishkeeping hobby, so I'll try to help out as much as I can without trying to come off as condescending. The actions of your fish sound like they're very stressed. When a fish no longer responds to the threat of being prodded with a net, the outlook isn't good. First thing you need to do is buy a test kit, this is non-negotiable especially in your situation since it sounds like your water parameters are in dire straits as well as the well being of your fish. Water changes I'd say 25-35% everyday for the next couple of days with a de-chlorinator added as well as something to boost your biological filtration. There are many products that have beneficial bacteria to help establish your tank. I'd also add some stress coat to help with the obvious stress your fish are under. If your in a major city the water should be of a decent quality which can be a problem in less popuated areas, so at least you should be okay if you follow the rest of my advice. If money's not an issue a R/O system would do wonders considering the current condition of your water quality. Usually I wouldn't think one would be necessary, but considering how much water changes will be necessary on a daily basis I think it would really help you.

Well after 2 yes I would hope it cycle but i will take your advice. I'm heading to the store now. So 20 gallons a day with prime and stress coat. And remove the jaguar.... I'll check back in a few days with the results

you should buy a bigger tank its more fun watching big tanks

I just bought prime and stress zyme so i will dose that to my water changes. Also I will be romoving the jag today.

Thanks for the help guys.... Hopefully i can salvage my tank and make it pretty again.
