i was fishing and had a 5 pound trout on the other end of the line but i lost it while i was trying to net it. when i checked the line it had broken at the knot. this has happened many times to me. i keep losing my jigs and lures and fish. why does this keep happening to me? is it my knot tying skills or my line is bad. ive been fishing for 5 years. the line is old and its like 6-10 months old

tie a knot on the exact line you used or use and it happens. Then take a pic and show us. That will help. try googling knot tying and it will help, i have methods but dont know how to explain via internet.

A knot is the weekest part of the line. There is no knot that holds 100% line strength. Some are close. I use the Blood knot, also called the Triline knot for most of my fishing. What pound test are you using and how tight is your drag set.

i was using 4 pound test. i have no clue what my drag was b/c i changed it as the fight went on. it was tight but it could rip line off. i lost him when i pulled up with the rod to bring him closer to the net and then he began to shake his head. i used the triline knot to tie it.

try buying a higher grade linbe like spyder wire or a fireline...or braided very hight knot strenght

after i lost that fish instead of using the triline knot i used a clinch knot and caught a 3.3 pound trout without it not breaking. so i think it might not just be the line

theres your problem 4 pound test. we use 6/8 pound for browns and rainbows
6/8 pound test scare all the trout away. 4 pound test line gets more bites than 6/8 pound test line. i was fishing at santa ana river lakes in ca. they have 20+ trout and i can tell u this they wont bite my jig with that heavy line on it

Your problem is the light line. It doesn't mean you need to stop using it. It is just that your 4 lb test is reduced at the knot. I suggust you adjust your netting technique. Just be real careful not to lift the fish out of the water at all on the line. Another option is to use slightly heavier florocarbon line. It is transparent in the water.
