I don't think pictus would be a good choice for Africans. Try to keep with what is from the region it mixes better. There are a lot of syno cats that would mix well.
Theyre gonna kill anything you put in there unless its big enough or tough enough to eat them.I scrape algae off the glass any rocks that get coverd in algae I take out and put in the plecos tank(he lives with the oscar) and he has it cleaned in a matter of hours.
Personally, I have no Plecos in my cichlid tank, but a friend of mine does. His cichlids aren't full-grown yet, but his pleco is quite large. He had a problem with them killing a smaller pleco, so he is just sticking with the big one. Also, make sure that there are enough places to hide for the plec.
Sorry to disagree with all but...
I have Albino Ancistrus with ALL of my African tanks, and they are never harrassed.
Make sure that there are enough rocks in the tank for the Plecos to hide on or in also.
As for cleaning...
The smaller Plecos do the best job...and they do not produce as much waste as an older and much larger Pleco would.
See if you can find Bushynose or Bristlenose Plecos...they seem to clean the best on all of my tanks.
forget them. i would never keep one with my africans. a toothbrish and agravel vacume are your best friends when it comes to maintinence. keep plecos sperate from africans, i think.
C'mon over here...http://nycichlids.com/
I do not think that you will find more than one person on the entire site who does not have any type of Pleco or Ancistrus in the AC tanks.
Golden algae eaters will live with Mbuna. I have one that has been with my mbuna from the start. Those that have a go at him get double the dosage back. I would suggest you place a larger plec in with smaller mbuna and let them grow. I also agree that a plec is a waste of time. Ends up eating more of the mbuna food than algae.
REMEMBER; Mbnuna live off algae so don't clean the rocks and entire tank. I only clean the front and side glass and I try and promote growth for the mbuna.
Synodontis cats do well as long as there are rocks a plenty.
