trust me, by adding food you'll be encouraging the bloom.;)

if it's definitely algae, it can only be caused by high nitrate or phosphate or too much light. which is it?
With a bloom as severe as this sounds. I believe its got some out door light coming in somehow . Am I wrong?

You could simply have the problem I once had which was high phosphates in my tap water REGARDLESS of what I did the algae was there to stay.

I purchased an inexpensive DI unit called tapwater purifier and problem was solved. After few water changes the tank water was phosphate free.

Things that kill algae can easily kill fish or throw the tank into chaos as good bacteria is killed thus increasing ammonia and or ph goes crazy thus dont use them and in the end algae will return.
OP , I hope you didn't miss this post. This is the issue I had when I was in Fresno Cali for a year. Couldn't figure it out

Nah its not that becasue i had my old tank setup for ages and never had any problem like that and it was totally clear water even with lower filtration , and its standing next to a window on the far end side but ive had my old tank exactly there too so i dont see any problems with it o_O. anyway im gonna leave it like this and put max light on so the new plants can grow / take up the algeas !

treat the cause not the symptom. you need to find out why you got it to avoid the problem. Test your water to see what your parameters are :)
