Good day! I just wanna ask if anyone can help me with this problem about convict cichlids. I bought a pair of convicts around 1.5 - 2 inches in size, and housed them in a 15g tank. I thought things were going to be ok and that they would breed. But it seems like the male is too aggressive and wont let the female go anywhere near his territory. Whenever she goes near him, he would chase her away. The female just stays on the upper corner of the tank. It's been almost a week now. Can anyone explain why this is happening? Will I ever have a chance of breeding them?:(

Probably just aggression. You might want to separate them with a tank divider to ease the agression. When attempting to breed you will take down the divider and give thema little alone time. You could also try giving the female a place to hide that the male cannot get in to.

happend to my friend to so he went out and bought 2 more female cons and let the male decide which he liked more than he brought back the other females to the lfs

I will try to put in some hiding place for the female and monitor them for a couple of days more. if there's no change then i will have to get another male convict. one that is less dominant because this male just isn't controllable. he even strikes on my 5" senegalus that i am temporarily housing with them for grow out.
do you think it's a good idea?

u need a lot of places for them to hide and potentially spawn. it will also help if u had a few more convicts from other store as well. get 2 males at one store and get 3 females at another location. it will help give the young a better chance of survival having parents that are not brother and sister that's what i did at least, heres my convict breeding set up.

i also did an experiment that involved food/aggression:
when i fist got them i fed them twice a day and put the food in one spot. this caused major aggression between everyone and some of the smaller convicts didn't get a chance to eat!! i feed them very small sinking pellets.

after a few days of the nonsenses, i started to feed them 3 X a day and each time i fed them i put a small amount of food in each of their own territories. at present time now they all hang out together in one large school!!! my other theory is that over time they adjusted to one another and learned to get along. i think its both; my help and their cooperation that caused this positive out come in my tank.

Deaths Sting, so did they spawn?

not yet, its only been about a week since i completed the tank. i need to leave them alone. i ve been constantly adding and taking away stuff ever since i got the tank. it wont be long now they just started establishing their own territories. this big black one and a female took over the rock on the right front corner of the tank. they spend all day there and when little males come by they chase them for like 1 sec then go back to their rock. its almost getting to the point where im always watching my convicts and not bothering to watch my rays and polys, except feeding time....:D its like a drug war, the drugs being the food..:headbang2

@Deaths Sting, well that's a good start. at least they're beginning to pair up. Good Luck bro. Let us know when they've got eggs already.
