Good day! I just wanna ask if anyone can help me with this problem about convict cichlids. I bought a pair of convicts around 1.5 - 2 inches in size, and housed them in a 15g tank. I thought things were going to be ok and that they would breed. But it seems like the male is too aggressive and wont let the female go anywhere near his territory. Whenever she goes near him, he would chase her away. The female just stays on the upper corner of the tank. It's been almost a week now. Can anyone explain why this is happening? Will I ever have a chance of breeding them?:(
Many breeders recommend adding a “dither fish” to encourage the parents to bond together against a common enemy. A slightly smaller convict cichlid makes a good dither fish. You want one they can’t kill too quickly.

Actually i did put it in one, well this one was an angel fish about 4-5 inches (measured from upper tip down to the lower tip). They started to chase around, and maybe things got a little too rough, the next day they ended up killing the angel fish.:(

Today, they still act the same. no change at all, the male is still patrolling his territory and the female just stays on the top corner of the tank. Occasionally she swims down but when the male sees her, he chases her up. The female is pale, while the male is so dark. showing signs of dominance. i'm planning to add some more convicts this week (that is if i could find more from another lfs).

I dont understand why this pair isn't communicating! :irked:

What else could be done here???

just get a few more pairs form different LFS and u should be fine. the other pairs will act as the dithers.

a larger tank wouldn't hurt either.
Problem is not the tank man, my purpose is to breed and so i need a male and a female to pair up. Getting a larger tank wont solve my problem.

raise the temp to 82F and give them more food and don't do a w/c for a bit... be careful though. <-------- this is what i have done and so far soo good.

i can't find another place that sells convicts. this s*cks!!!

It could, is there enough room for them to get away from each other and have there own spaces?

I just normally see 20-25g listed as the minimum for breeding them, so who knows.

I think the person who said add more females might have the right idea though. starting with a small group so they can choose each other is supposed to work well.

I'm definitely on to this idea but my problem is that i can't find another lfs that's selling convicts as of the moment. maybe I'll have to go back to the same lfs, and just don't mind about the inbreeding stuff. Hopefully they will work. :)
