Problems! help on 67 gallon all african male tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
One rule I usually follow is if one fish is chasing everyone, they get removed and if there is one fish getting chased by everyone, they get removed.

I totally agree with this, it has worked really well in my Mbuna tank. It's weird, too, because sometimes it's just one particular fish of a species that has a bad attitude, but another fish of that same species will get along.

hello guys,

Today i notice the Copadichromis borleyi has become the tank boss and chasing the Protomelas Taiwan Reef alot. causing the Protomelas Taiwan Reef in sub-dominant status.

nothing too serious... the Aulonocara baenschi and the Altolamprologus white calvus seems happy about this. as the Protomelas Taiwan Reef stopped harassing them.

seems like these guys are trying to over take each other to become the tank boss...

another thing , i notice the Utakas grow very fast compared to peacocks and mbunas.

i bought the utakas 3 months ago at 1.5 inch and most of them are 3 to 3.5 inches now... so fast!
while the peacocks and mbuna are still at 2 to 2.5 inches...

You gotta find a tank balance and thats what it sounds like they are trying to work out. No matter what you do you will end up with a boss of the tank and some fin nipping. Moving the rock work or decor around in the tank can help, esp. when you re-introduce the german. Taking out the agressor and seeing how it goes is an option (which it sounds like you did) and If there is one fish they gang up on you can remove that fish (the one being picked on) and see how it goes - sometimes it balances out and sometimes someone else will start to get picked on. You can try adding a few more and that could help spread out the agression as well. A lemon jake should work fine. I would stick with fish from the same lake as well and I would personally pull out the calvus.

As for growth rate, each fish will be different and each speceis will be different some grow faster than others (feeding and water quality can also help in growth rate)

hello ash,

thanks for advice

my idea final stocklist will be as below:
1) 1 Labidochromis caeruleus
2) 1 Aulonocara baenschi
3) 1 Aulonocara "German Red"
4) 1 Copadichromis borleyi
5) 1 Protomelas Taiwan Reef
6) 1 Protomelas taeniolatus
7) 1 Sciaenochromis fryeri
8) 1 Altolamprologus white calvus
9) 1 Placidochromis electra
10) 1 Astatotilapia latifasciata
11) 1 Steatocranus casuarius

i am still looking out for the last 3 in the list, which makes 11 fishes in total.

is it better to add more than 11 say... 15 fishes to spread out aggression?
i am looking at Copadichromis azureus, Protomelas similis, Pundamilia nyererei, Stomatepia pindu, Otopharynx lithobates, Lethrinops sp. "Red Cap", as these are available in my region. just considering...

thanks

hello guys

i just added a Placidochromis electra male 2inch yesterday. i bought from Aquarama 2013 here.
this is a really light blue beautiful fish. too bad the Sciaenochromis fryeri is aggressive towards it.
i took out the Sciaenochromis fryeri to the hospital tank with the german red.

i will out grow the Placidochromis electra and Aulonocara baenschi to a decent size first before i try add the aggressors back to the main tank. just hope and pray this can work...

hello guys

a few months has passed, my fishes are settling in... although there are still some aggression issues,
no death or serious fighting...

i need some advice. i have been looking for a GREEN color cichlid.

1) i was thinking of getting Nimbochromis Venustus at first but then alot of experienced folks advice not to mix as this fish gets large 12 inches and is too aggressive.

2) then i go ahead and bought a Callochromis pleurospilus. i read and see pictures on internet the male should color up with light green on the belly. too bad mine didn't color up and remains a sliver fish... i will be selling it away.

3) now i am looking at this fish Neolamprologus tetracanthus, it is a olive green fish. but i read it is also aggressive and it grows to 8 inches. i am not sure if i can mix a small one will my current stock?

thanks
