I had an beautiful Atlantic Stingray who was eating very well and was always very healthy until I added a chemical called Algae Destroyer Advanced made by Aquarium Pharmaceuticals just to clear up a little foggy water. I had read up about the chemical before I used it and it said it was only harmful to freshwater crustaceans like shrimp and lobster. I put it in around 9:00 at night and by the next morning my baby was DEAD! My other fish are completely fine, any ideas?

I don't believe Algae Destroyer would harm rays. Maybe just a coincidence, although chems should be the last option.

Anything that would kill algae and allow the debris to settle to the bottom of the tank would be problematic to substrate feeders, basically ANYTHING that feeds on the bottom. Such things aren't safe for sensitive animals such as rays or catfish in addition to the listed animals on the package.

In addition to the trash debris on the bottom the oxygen level usually drops.

BTW, why would you use this product to clear cloudy or "foggy" water??

This product was specifically for foggy water and I had tried a 30 gallon water change quite a few times before I ever tried this chemical.

No, that product isn't for cloudy water, it is to destroy Algae. My sister has used it before. Chemicals are a last resort for me.

If someone at a store handed you this to solve your problem, they didn't do you a favor. If you grabbed it from the shelf, you could have chosen better. If the people at the store were aware of your problem and let you buy the wrong product you should discuss the event with someone at the store.

The bottle says
~ Helps resolve algae problems
~Effectively controls "green water" algal blooms and string or hair algae
~Keeps freshwater aquariums clean and clear

I have had fish for years but I am new at having stingrays I would very much like to continue having them I am only learning from my mistakes and was hoping someone could help me out a little. What would you have personally done if it was your tank so I will know next time?

It helps keep aquariums clear of algal blooms, but doesn't reduce cloudy water except in the case of algae.

Green and cloudy? Bacteria. I once had my water turn completely green, couldn't even see the fish. I chose to start over. Put the fish in a bucket with some tank water, drained the tank completely and refilled. Left the filter media intact.
