Here is the one I have and they ARE the way to go. I started with one of those floating needle styles initialland it was reading 1.015 and my actual level was 1.027. Scrap it and buy one of these. SW fish, Live Rock, etc ae too expensive to risk for $50 meter.

Sorry, thought I attached the link. Let's try again.

Thanks...and whoah, that's hecko pricey. Dude, my setup right now cost frigging 21 bucks except for the tank and the HOB and the rocks which were from a beach and the gravel which I already had...and a provisional $30 for fish OR a mantis shrimp...
Salt mix = $11
Hydrometer = $5
Cycling bacteria = $5

By the way I live in Hong Kong so everything's cheap...

Humbug damsels are the equivalent of $1.25

i wouldn't even pay $1.25 for a 3 stripe... :D

you pretty much wasted your money on the 'bacteria' 99% of those types of products ar complete BS..

i'd recomend the hydrometer.. that's the type we use at work and we never have problems with 'em

Don't get me wrong. I don't own a nice refract. I use the old school junk at home. I have to use the nice stuff at work, though. And yes, they can be that much more on spot with the readings.

Ok. Thanks for both your replies! My hydrometer works now...I'm just too embarrassed to tell you why but this thread was posted too hastily ><

Maybe when I've been keeping salt for a while I'll tell...hopefully it'll be funny then but it's defo not funny now ;D

Did you afraid to take it out of the box? Seriously though, make sure to calibrate with a refractometer or natural sea water which is at 1.026. In the mean time keep your readings at 1.023 in case the hydrometer is too high or too low.

Ok. I'll tell now...it doesn't matter to me that much...keep in mind that I'm 14...I added some salt mix into a 5 gallon bucket which had cool water....and the stuff seemed to had stopped dissolving so I thought the water was saturated... then when I filled my tank the salinity wasn't even at 0.017 yet so my hydrometer showed no reaction...then I tasted the water in my tank and the water from the sea...and it tasted kind of the same...so I thought my hydrometer was broken. Then the next day I added more salt and tada, the needle floated.
