i recently bought a new fluval fx5.. everything is good besides it overflows. when the canister initially start up it runs. then when it shuts down to get the air out of the canister ... im guessing there is no syphon break... and the water continues to fill in the cansters and then starts to over flow from where the lid connects to the lower part (bucket).. the bolt/nuts are tight.. does anyone have an idea of what the problem is? i watched the video 50 times and followed all the guide lines.. this filter is ruining my basement and my tank is now lacking a filter. i also tried calling the hotline but everytime i was put on hold i was disconnected. helppppp pleeaaasse :nilly:

The lid O-ring isn't seated properly...either that of it's missing entirly. You should also make sure the baskets are seated properly and not filled completely. This will keep the lid from seating all the way down onto the seal even though the knobs are tightened. You should leave at least a 1/2" space in each of the center baskets for clearance.

yep it has to be this as wold said, its eaither not seated or missing the o ring.

yes, it is obviously not sealing properly. I also would guess that it is the rubber o ring. do you have bio filtration in the tank, in gravel, or perhaps already established ceramic rings?
If you do then, while you fix the filter you could use the ceramic rings in the baskets and stack them in the fish tank itself (remove the sponges). position your powerhead (pump) so that it shoots water through the stack of baskets, thus, through the bio-filter.

check your amonia levels every day to ensure that this temp filtration method keeps up with your bio load.

Do you understand what I am talking about?

yup i understand lol i been in the hobby for a while.. the tanks empty.. just a pleco .. as for the filter.. everything is seated ok... as for the o ring.. there isnt one.. where one should be ..i noticed this when setting it up and inspecting everything .. and i thought that is what the problem was after i watched it overflow... only thing is that when i looked at the diagrams that it came with.. i didnt see any o ring numbered under the parts description... does anyone know the size and where i could get one asap? i just want to get it up and running... thank you Boost

filter lid o ring

The O-ring in question is a bit of a booger to find. If you turn the lid over and look at the tallest plastic ridge...

the O-ring fits deep in the slot between this ridge and the outer plastic ring that contains the notches for the hold down clamps... you might have to use a flashlight to see it.

(It may well be missing...I can easilly see this bieng missed during assembly.)

If the baskets... (when the baskets are seated correctly the tallest part of the upper basket is 1/8" or so below the sealing ridge of the cannister body.) and lid are seated properly there shouldn't be any space left between the lid and the filter body when the clamps are tightened.

NOTE: there SHOULD be a little space between the lid and the body BEFORE you tighten the clamps...If not the O-ring is probubly missing.

If the O-ring is in place and everything is seated properly you can try spraying PAM cooking spray along the O-ring slot. I usually do this anyway with all of my cannister O-rings because it keeps them supple. Try not to get any of it on anything else if at all possible.
