my friend had a redtail catfish and was going to throw it into a pond because it was eating his other fish. it is about 12 inches. for right now i have it in a 75g tank. ive had in for about 5 days and he has only ate one small goldfish. he doesnt move around much. something doesnt seem right. any ideas or opinions on what the problem could be?

The problem is the fish is stressed. A 75 gallon is just to small for an RTC. RTCs will stress easily when moved like a lot of catfish and will some times refuse to eat for days or weeks. I would recommend moving it to a bigger tank or arrange for it to placed in a proper environment.

i also noticed it has, some type of a ulcer looking sores on its body from when i got it. do you think if treat it with melafix and pimafix things should start to clear up? ohh, and i have a bigger tank :)

First you have to allow him to settle in. At 12" and the only occupant of the tank he is okay but not for long.

First part, just because the RTC wont eat a goldfish means there's a problem. Have you thought of trying something different? Possibly a fish fillet or krill/shrimp.

Secondly, The 75 isn't a bad temporary tank due to it's footprint is identical to a 125/150 but you definately need a bigger tank soon since it's already 12".

Thirdly, be cautious with uses medications with RTCs. A lot of times the medication does more harm than good. Try putting the temperature up and adding aquarium salt before using medications.

is anything attacking it to cause stress? a big fellow like that should be pretty healthy but i heard stories of a rtc living in a 50g for 2 years grew to about 18inches
