Brought this home tonight, 6' x 4' x 2', tank with center overflow, steel stand and tops for 300 bucks. Needs some buffing out. First order of business though is repair to one corner, any suggestions
First off....super super great pick up!!!! I cant really see if its broken by tge seams or what. Im figuring that you would need to take another piece of acrylic and reinforce that cracked area. Please keep us updated im excited for u!!
Wonderful diamentions and a great deal. I know what i'd do with that corner...Remove the center overflow...seal the holes and then install a rear overflow in that corner.
Your other option would be to have a thick piece of acrylic cut into a triangle and then cement it in place in that corner. The repair would be easy to hide and it would be plenty strong.
That looks way better than the guy described it. He told me it had a huge gash in the corner and was only good for scrap. I can't believe that is the huge gash he described.
I'd see if you can get a block of acrylic like 3" to a side and use acrylic cement to bond it into that corner. After that I'd take an angle grinder to the outside and smooth it all out so your cracks won't spread.
whatever yo do don't use a freaking torch to "melt" the patch peices in place. Do yourself a favor and get some weld on and bond a piece or two in place over the damaged area. There's about a zillion write ups online on how to bond acrylic.
A bit harder repair but a far stronger one would be to cut a 2" slice off of that end on the tank...Trim the removed piece back to size and then reinstall the side. You'd lose a couple of inches of tank space but it would be as strong as new and just as attractive.
