Project: 350 gallon plywood tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sorry its been so long since I posted any updates. The tank is doing great, I have congo tetras spawning in there for the first time!

I will take some pictures, hopefully tomorrow. There is algae on the sides and back now so it looks really natural.

Thanks for all the compliments and anyone who has any questions is welcome to send me a Pm.

Loachfan, I'm glad to hear your tank is still doing well. I was most inspired by your tank build. Thanks for posting all the information you have. I will be looking forward to pics and future updates and may be asking more questions as I progress with my own tank build.

In order to make sure that the silicone would not pull away from the pond liner or the acrylic, I sandwiched it between the acrylic, plywood, pond liner, and 1x2 lumber.

I then did a second layer of silicone on top of the one that was sandwiched in order to have a nice finish.

Here's the part I'm most concerned about - you didn't have any problem having the silicone stick to the 40 mil EPDM pond liner? It looks like a great design, I've just read about silicone not sticking to EPDM pond liner.

Kerbcheck, I wasn't that worried about whether it would stick or not. There are two layers of silicone. One below the other. The bottom one is used to fill in the space between the wood frame + pond liner and the acrylic. The wood frame was put in after the acrylic so it is very tight. The second layer of silicone was placed on top to help create a seal for any areas that got missed with the first layer of silicone. This two layer process was used on both the inside and outside of the acrylic window.

As well, I used a product from Loctite to make sure the pond liner adhered to the plywood on the area around the acrylic to have an extra level of security.

So far so good :)
