NOT necessarily destined to fail ive kept small salt tanks with nothing but about a 5 lb. piece of live rock, a small ammount of live sand in the bottom 1 small power head, and only one small fish. The Key...VERY low stocking compared to biological. I started with sand, R/O water, The rock, mixed the salt 1 cup per gallon per instructions on sea salt. Let run for a couple of days with power head only, put in 1 clown fish... Ran for over a year no problem finally added a red shrimp. Did monthly water changes with R/O, Ran til i took it down. Your mileage may vary :headbang2

if you thought you used table salt in a saltwater tank you have a long way to go before you set up a tank. Get a few good books and read them get some patience then get more books.

all due respect, but this guy hit the nail on the head. if you want to use table salt for a saltwater tank, you apparently havent done even the most basic of reading into salt.

save a bunch of fish's lives, some of your own stress and money, and do a bit more reading first. theres more to salt tanks than just tossing in water and watching it go like we do with freshwater

i agree i started a 15 gal reef tank about 4 months ago and it has been alot of work ever since. this key to salt is read, read, and more reading and move slowly. by the sounds of it you are the fast moving fish keeper so slow down and figure out you plan if you are using live sand and rock there is no need to add fish to cycle just wait about 6 weeks. in my reef i didnt start to see good growth for about 2 months. take everyone advise seriously it will save you alot of time money and frustration.

I whole heartedly agree with others on this post about reading a lot because there is a lot to know about any phase of any endeavour. But you dont have to spend a fortune to have a nice little salt tank, after listening to lots of " Experts" and spending tons of money for about 5 years i came down to that little tank i mentioned above. But i do agree NO table salt, and do your home work, and a LOT of home work if youre gonna try reef and corals, and oh yeah , call your banker for a home equity line of credit. Thats why youll find me now mostly in the natives forum now :)
