I realized today that while I know what fish I have/want, I have know idea how to pronounce a lot of the scientific names. I have no "fish friends" to talk to so I never get the chance to try to say these words. When I ask for something special at my LFS I can only use common names and we all know that this does not always produce the desired results. The one I am currently struggling with ( and the primary reason for this thread) is characin. Is is pronounced char-a-sin, car-a-kin? I'm clueless.

Can someone please spell this for me phonetically please. Also, don't stop there, phonetically spell out any other toughies I or anyone else might be struggling with.

Thanks, Ryan.

car-a-sin

I say chair-uh-kin. lol Everyone I know says it like that.

This was actually my next question. Bichir. Pronounced biker as in a motorcycle rider?

I think so. There has been a few threads on it but that's how I say it.

I say Beech-er. lol :P

OK, while we're on the subject, I have a noobie one for you all...

How do you pronounce Pleco?

Plee-co or Ple-co?

I've always said it Plee-co, but said "Ple"costomus. I am assuming I've been saying it wrong all this time?
