A Classical Roman would say: "Ah-kest-roe-rhin-kuss fall-ki-rost-riss"
Most English speaking scientists would say: "Ah-sess-troe-reenk-uss fal-si-ros-triss"

Thanks alot

I damn near passed out trying to pronounce all that. lol:ROFL:

I keep a buisness card in my wallet with all the proper names of the fish i am looking for, and when i got to a lfs i show them the card so they can reference it when looking at there list.

So what about bichir, I have seen and heard so many. I have said biker. the guy at my lfs hadn't a clue what I was talking about until I started failing to pronounce polypterus.

"Bichir" is a French transliteration of an African name. The French wrote it as they heard it, so pronounce the word as a Frenchman would: "buh-sheer".

The "bik-er", "buh-keer", "burch-ur", etc. pronunciations come from a mistaken attempt to pronounce the word as though it were Greek in origin.

Tigrinus catfish.

I hear ALOT of people saying "ti-ger-ri-nus". Is it "tig-ri-nus" or "ti-ger-ri-nus"? Lol. I don't know where are they're getting the word tiger from..

Truly some great info everyone. I do wish that all the pronounciation threads could be lumped into one.

Probably the most common fish name that I hear is betta.

Most people say "baita" but I prefer BETT-ah. I've said this way from the very start and I've never heard anyone say it differently at an IBC show.

Along the same lines, plakat is pronounced plah-KAHT, atleast by betta enthusiasts here in the states.
I used to think this was pronounced PLAH-kut.

tiger-eenus hehehe

Thank god someone asked Bichir. That one kills me.
