if many of you are like me, when you meet up with another hobbiest there is often awkward moments when you dont know what the hell eachother is talking about based on your pronunciation of the Sp..

So... i figured i would open up a space so that we could share how each of us do pronounce some of these Sp. names so that maybe we can find the correct pronunciation, or at least the most common.

Dovii for instance. in my mind it is (dough-vee)

Umbee, in my mind is "omb" like "tomb" (omb-bee)

what do you say? tell me what you think of these two, and through out some new one while you're at it!

When i asked a guy at my lfs about bichirs i said it "bir-chir" and he said biker. Made quite an awkward moment...

Umbee would be Umm-bee to me.

ANother real good one is bichir. I've always said it as(Bi-sheer). I've heard it as (biker) yes like a bike that you ride and (Bi-sher). So IDK. (Bi-sheer) just sounds normal to me.

the biker version must be some england or some other country version. That just sounds soooo weird, lol.

Dovii-dough-vee to me
Umbee-I pronounced it as "am-bee". Strange as it may sound though.

And here are some for goldfish:
watonai-"wa-town-eye"
tosakin-almost close to "toesucking"
ryukin-"ra-yu-kin"

bichir-"bee-sheer" or "bee-cheer"

i said do-vee for a long time, but am now saying do-veye.

i always said b!tch-er, get alot of looks about that one.

how about pleco? i say it with an E, most say it sorta like playco.

for a long time, i always called bichirs (bur-sheers) until i realized i was adding an extra "r" then i changed to "bi" but without the "i" saying its name, as in "bit" and now i agree (bi-sheer)

when i got into keeping african cichlids, one that threw me off was "Acei". i pronounced it like the later of the word "hockey" (ockey). come to find out, its more like (aye-see-eye)
