Has anyone seen the Planet Earth BBC and Blue Planet documentaries? There is a scene in one of the videos on this set, either in the Planet earth: Rivers & Waterways segment or in the bonus features in Blue Planet set in Amazon Abyss. It showed a black Ghost Knifefish being filmed in the wild, for the first time ever. The specimen shown was much larger than what was previously thought to be the max size.

if no one has ever seen any of these things or never seen any pictures, then why is the same stuff spouted when asked about max size?

People constantly look stuff up on the internet or read about these in books. Now while some believe one thing, there's always going to be a different opinions. While I have never seen a 2' BGK, I'm not going to neglect the fact that I've read about this. And there'll always be someone who will correct someone because that's what they've read or looked up themselves. I can say that I've read that N. Notopterus will get 1' in aquaria, but again, internet and books have state that they can attain 2'. I do put down things like, "African Brown Knives will average 8" but can max at 12" just to save someone else the trouble of stating that fact. I've never seen a 4' Arowana in person or in pictures, but people are going to tell you that fact.
I remember watching the program but I can't remember if they stated a size or gender. From what I saw they wouldn't be able to even tell if it were male/female even if the gender were known by visual appearance.
