Proper feeding and care of a Black Pacu

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Water is not deep green any more. That's a good start. Now just need to get that nitrate under control. Well done!

It was more of a light poo brown, as appealing as that sounds. I have heard Arrowhead plants also do well in making a botanical filter, would you have any idea where to acquire those?

I've seen them, I think, at Walmart or Home Depot during the warm season. The great thing about pothos is that they don't require a lot of light. I don't know about arrowheads light requirement though

great job Bob. no pun intended. his lips look great considering. hows he doing. have you thought about a drip system? no more water changes and it sounds like you have a drain not far away

Yeah, good job. We've got some Pacu at the Tennessee Aquarium that are at least 60 lbs. Alot of them are 20+ yrs old. Big fatties.

I have seen the big suckers in Chattanooga. The Newport Aquarium also has some pacu, do not remember if they are red bellied or blacks. Anyway, something urgent has come up. As of yesterday, 2/25/2015, Bubba is a lighter color. Looking him over, the exterior parts of his gills have a dark tinge, where before they had a pink/white tinge. Looking through fish disease lists to try and match symptoms.

I should also mention that Nitrite levels are undetectable and Nitrate is between 20 and 40 ppm.

Congratulations on getting the nitrates down. The coloration on our fish is always changing and goes from pale to dark. When they are stressed or resting, they are pale. Is Bubba gasping or breathing hard? Our pacu have dark edged operculums.

Unless Bubba is gasping or has labored breathing or a change in his behavior, I wouldn't worry. Our fish have labored breathing when they slam into a tank lid and injure themselves. It seems like they have to catch their breath or wait until the pain subsides before they can carry on normally. We know when they do this, as there is a very loud boom like an explosion. There is usually water on the wood floor, and loose scales in the water (and sometimes on the top of the tank or on the floor), and there is always a scrape with missing scales on whoever is pale and gasping.

Bubba only does that when I am doing a water change and he gets spooked by the tube. No scales missing, thankfully. Will just keep an eye on Bubba, as his behavior is otherwise normal. Thank you very much.

Glad youre turning things around. Scrape that stubborn algae off! Jk, i just hate seeing algae. Is there a light on the tank?
