Hi everyone, my names Mike and I'm relatively new to the group. I currently have a 7" RTC, 6.6" RTC x TSN and 6" Lima together and doing well. I want to start a strictly South American fish tank (eventually indoor pond), but am not sure what the PH needs to be as well as water temp.

I want to get everything right before I start buying and adding new fish. I have a grow out tank ready to go for the small pbass,Tinfoil barbs,TSN and others, but want to ask the group your recommendations first. I read these threads often and I'm very impressed with how friendly and helpful each member seems to be. I hope to eventually get to the point where my experiences can help others as well.

If you guys have any helpful tips for me as well as pics of your own set ups for examples I can use that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys!

Mike

what are your perameters in the tank as of right now?

just keep ph on the light side
and 86 the temp

i dont think you need to go as high as 86. If he were keeping discus that would be a different story. I would say maintain the perameters that you already have. Your fish are already used to them and changing them does not go well for fish.

PH of 7-7.5 and temps in the 78 range is what i do sometimes even lower. that way when you have to medicate or whatever when you raise the temp you actually have room to go higher rather than keepin the tank at 86 and then tryin to push them to 90 yeah right most fish will croak. all depends. i keep my fish round the same temp as my room so like i said high 70's ph i prefer neutral 7.......the main thing is consistancy don't have it goin up and down and from 70 to 90 if you have to increase temp i like to go 2 degrees every day they can handle that

Thanks guys. My fish are currently in a 40 long. Lets say the PH creeps out of the 7-7.5 range. How do I even begin to change it?

Add drift wood to lower PH. But i have kept mine nutral. 7 to 7.5 or so. The reason of keeping temp high is to prevent ich.

Why is pH an issue? It shouldn't be an issue. Look at KH and GH and not the pH. None of the fish in your first post is that sensitive to require low pH or vice versa.

This is why a quarantine tank is a must for new arrivals and quarantine for four weeks. There is no way to prevent ich. You can however avoid it from touching your current stocks by quarantining the new arrivals.
