PROPER water change

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I fill my barrel (the bucket age is over for me). If you take a deep sniff at the water, you may notice a chlorine smell, like when you're in a swimming pool. I let it sit overnight. and I use it when the smell is gone.
I have only chlorine in my tap water.
If you have chloramines, you SHOULD treat it first.

there is no 'proper' method.

there are several different methods that all work just as well.

eg. draining the tank, adding dechlor directly to the old tank, then putting tapwater in on top works fine. thats how LFS's do it and many (including myself) do. there is no chlorine in the tank water, so when the new water hits the old water (with the dehclor in it) and mixes, the dechlor works virtually instantly.

others say you must dechlor the water BEFORE it hits the new tank, and that works too. but for large volumes, its totally impractical.

some say to dose for only the new water (thats what I do)

others (the people that make the dechlor lol) say dose for the whole tank so you use more and buy more of their product..lol

both will work.

read the lable on yer dechlorinator...
prime - pretreat water then refill.... or.... dose the tank for full tank volume then fill

which means both are the correct way... however if your local water happens to be ultra crappy (as mine is) i only/always pretreat then fill the tank with treated water

Right, the reason I posted the question is because the bottle is so unclear, and I know with fishkeeping sometimes the smallest technicality can make all the difference, just makin sure I wasn't damaging my fish once a week. I think some pretty good things have been said here.

All i do is empty about 25% of the tank water , clean the glass of any alge/ dirt and then just fill the tank back up with a bucket straight from the tap .

Some might think its wrong for me to use the water striaght from the tap but it works for me , i do this twice a week and have done this for many of years now and havnt had any problems from doing it this way .

It depends on the chlorine concentration you have in your water. A guy was doing something like that. And someday he was surprised when his fish suddenly got ich. As I stated before. Use your nose!! A quick sniff at the water will let you judge its chlorine content.

I always drain, add water from tap, then as filling add condioner. so it has that extra turbulance to mix it up.
