Proper way to clean your filter

If you have a mini-cycle or white bacteria bloom (cloudy water) after cleaning your filters, then you do not have enough biological filtration in your fish tank. I've had my biological media out of water for 1 minute and never had issues like a mini cycle.

+1
I usually have my media out of the water for 2-5 minutes and I’ve never had issues either. One thing i do is clean my filters on different days. For example one tank has 4 filters so i clean two one week and two the next etc...

That's exactly what I do, but I was told the reason my tank has a mini cycle after cleaning my filter is that the bio media is out of water for more then a few seconds.
Whoever told you that is wrong.
You don't want your biomedia to dry out, so you may want to place it in a container with some aquarium water while you clean well the mechanical media and canister boxes themselves. But a few seconds or minutes of exposure to air WILL NOT KILL your biomedia.
