Proper way to size a fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I always use SL when I post, which is against the norm on fish forums it seems.

I do this for two reasons though: 1) the hobby books and magazines when I was young and first getting into the hobby all used SL and 2) SL is a more meaningful detail when it comes to say waste production and such. A 12" SL oscar makes x amount of waste no matter if his tail is only 2" or 5" ...

I'm not a fisherman, so I have no use for TL. ;)

Asia? Neither the OP or any of the previous posters are in Asia :screwy:

Most people are just estimating the length and it is overall with the exception of streamers off the fins or tales. If measuring dry the tail should be fanned and not clamped as this would add extra length.

I use SL when considering whether or not a fish is too big for a given tank size, and TL if i were to describe how long the fish is

I think the point of SL is that it measures the size of the actual fish, w/o worrying about the fins, which aren't biologically relevant . . .

Hey I have bought 11 fish from Asia in the last yr and I am sure a lot of other people have also..It's good info when shipping is by the inch.Jerk

So why not explain that in the first place? Instead of some incomplete post that just looks like random nonsense. This way you won't have to resort to childish name calling when someone comments on your post.

I just thought it was rude of you the way you replied to my post.I know it was rude bro. Made me mad.I was just stating the fact.I think most people who sell and ship fish measure from tip of snout to the base of tail. When you by a fish from Thailand at 3'' most are shocked when it shows up at their house at 5''+
