Proper way to wash hands...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't wash my hands before messing with the tank, unless i have soap or oil on it. But usually if i wash the soap off my hands i still won't stick my hand in the tank rightaway. I just wait till later.

I dont usually take too much care when washing hands before I clean a tank.

Just a quick rinse.

I'm down with what Steve sez (compliments on the cut 2 the quick answer too).
Doubt if I could unknowingly have enough awful stuff on my hands after a quick rinse to wreck even 5 gallons of inhabited water unless I had Homer Simpsons gig or something like that. Wouldn't want my fish to get toomahs!

so exactly is the proper way to wash your hands before doing anything in your aquarium?

That's really a good question. In some stores, they sell full-arm gloves. I've heard other senior hobbyists say they always wear latex gloves.

What it comes down to, is what you have on your hands ... I wouldn't reach into my tanks with hands full of creme or lotion, oil or gasoline smell. In that case, I always wash my hands with lye soap real well. I wouldn't use scented soap, since the parfume stays on your hands, and I don't need my fish to smell it ;) In general, I rinse my hands with hot water and use a fresh towel, which will then be used for working on the tank.
