Pros and Cons about Pool Filter sand

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have pool filter sand in my 1 tank. The only thing that is for me getting use to not sticking the syphon in the sand like you would gravel. You have to generally just float it above. The only other thing I have a tiny issue with that I didn't with gravel is more brown algae issues but my tank with the pool sand is new and just cycled. I didn't have the issue of brown algae with my tank that has gravel.
I have contacted alot of different pool filter sand places and this one company proves to be one of the best out there. It is the same cost as any other pool sand but they actually use this in whale tanks at the Mystic CT. Aquarium.

If you want I can forward you contact information with the guy I spoke to through email and they will even send a sample possibly to you as well.
I didn't use this sand in my tank but I am now wishing I had. I ended up getting the HTH pool sand by arch chemicles/ They have grain sizes a bit bigger than the mystic white and it is not as 'white' as mystic white either.

Play sand is dirtier, smaller grain sizes and compacts like nobodys business.

I would suggest you get the 3m color quartz its usually about $20 for a 50lb bag and if you get the "T" grade its is less likely to be sucked into filters. the only problem is it can be hard to find.

I don't know about pf sand, I use play sand myself, but I imagine it is similar (except play sand is less coarse). I've heard a good way to clean the dust off before you put it in is to put the sand in two pillow cases and run water through it. Cleaning it while in the tank is simple, just siphon along the top layer of it.

I use PFS in my 150 and I love it. I find it easy to clean but i do have UGJs and I use a modified python which is basically a long small diameter plastic tube instead of the gravel vac.
