Hey I'm thinking of getting a bgk for my 65 gallon tank and I'm wondering what some of the pros and cons that you guys have had from your experience with them. Thanks!

Pros:
Easy to care for once they get to be about 5 inches long - before that you really need to make sure they get enough food.
Very cool looking - best Knife around - but then I am biased :)
Very tolerant of other fish - as long as it is not another BGK
Territorial about their caves only.

Cons:
hmmmm... I prefer to leave the lights off on my BGK tank as it is more comfortable for him but that is only by my choice - so I can't have live plants in there.

Can't think of any other Cons.

When they get larger, they produce a lot of "waste". That would be my only real complaint.

Their long fins are an irresistible target for fin-nippers like barbs. I wouldn't keep any nippy fish with a BGK.

BGK have been known to eat the eyes and tails of other tankmates, although I have not experienced this myself. They will definitely eat anything small enough to fit into the mouth whole, so keeping small fish, shrimp, etc. is out (unless you intend them to be feeders).

Hope you decide to get one!

Thats strange as i have always loved them as i consider them to put quite a small bioload on the filter as all their organs are in their head

Pros: Get more beautiful with size, Easy to keep fish, Not too predatory if well fed, Adapts well to light, Good tank mate for fish of same size (providing it's not an electric fish[elephant nose or dolphin fish]).

Cons: Can't keep more than one per tank, May hide a lot due to being noctural, Grows SLOW (If you consider that a con).

i have a con, dont keep with really small fish or plecos, especially if the pleco likes the cave that the BGK is in, they will fight, my plecos a beast lmao. Actually the other day my bgk swallowed one of my guppies by accident because he was trying to bite my pleco, you know how their jaw can open really wide lmao:P?

I agree with all of the above they are great fish but as for them not liking light I have conditioned my BGK to like the light as that is the only time I feed him. He was raised with Discus juveniles in a smaller tank so I could actually hand feed him in his cave whilst he was small then moved him to a larger tank and now when the light comes on he is out like a shot to the top of the tank for his meal. I've found that as he got larger he was out and about more in the tank and rarely hides any more. Depending on what you feed they actually can grow quite fast. By boy is now 14" and almost 5 years old, he started off the size of my index finger.

I say get one their are only a few limitations and they are the most fasinating fish to watch.

Pro: Coolest fish ever
can be trained to be handfed
swims sideways, front/ back

Cons: Not for beginner hobbyist.
Cannot be with agressive and fin nippy fishes
Can't be with small fishes that can fit in its mouth (well, it depends on the bgks temperment)

They have a slow growth, right?

Yep, but again it depends on what you feed it. Try power feeding it, but always skip feeding him/her the next day. Don't wanna have liver problems/ swim bladder disease.
